Less than 50 minutes from Nazaré
Let’s grab a few friends and head from Nazaré to discover a fascinating history of the area surrounding Nazare. From the miracles of Fatima to the walled village of Obidos once gifted from a King to his Queen on their wedding day...

Óbidos
About 35 minutes from Nazaré is a little medieval town wrapped inside castle walls...and Óbidos is one of those places that just makes you want to wander.
Cobblestone streets, white houses covered in flowers, tiny shops, cafés, a castle above it all...and yes, we’re stopping for a ginjinha in a little chocolate cup.
There’s a lot of history here, but Óbidos is just as much about slowing down, getting lost in the streets and seeing what’s around the next corner.
Honestly...this one’s an easy day trip to love.
Fátima
About an hour from Nazaré is Fátima...one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.
The Sanctuary is enormous, but somehow still feels peaceful. You’ll see the Chapel of the Apparitions, the basilicas, candles burning and people who have travelled from all over the world to be here.
Even if you’re not religious, it’s a place that makes you stop for a minute.
...and that alone makes Fátima worth the trip.

A Road Trip to the Past...

Tomar
About an hour from Nazaré is Tomar...a town filled with Knights Templar history, castle walls, hidden symbols and one of the coolest old buildings in Portugal.
We’ll wander through the Convent of Christ, step inside the incredible Charola, walk the old streets and finish beside the Nabão River with something cold and a Fatia de Tomar.
If castles, history and a little mystery are your thing...you’re gonna love this one.
Peniche
Less than an hour from Nazaré, Peniche sticks right out into the Atlantic...and the ocean is pretty much everywhere you look.
Fishing boats, old streets, a fortress, huge cliffs, surf beaches and some of the best coastal views around.
We’ll drive out to Cabo Carvoeiro, watch the waves smashing into the rocks and finish near Baleal with our shoes off, a little wine and the surfers catching the last waves of the day.
Peniche just feels like the Atlantic.

São Martinho do Porto
Only about 20 minutes from Nazaré is São Martinho do Porto...and the first thing you’ll notice is that incredible seashell-shaped bay.
The water is calm, the promenade is lined with cafés and restaurants and the whole place has this easy, relaxed feel.
We’ll grab a coffee, wander along the waterfront, check out the tunnel that takes you straight through the hill to the open Atlantic and maybe finish with some wine as the sun drops behind the bay.
It’s close, easy and a completely different feel from Nazaré.
Alcobaça
About 20 minutes from Nazaré is Alcobaça...home to one of Portugal’s most impressive monasteries and one of its greatest love stories.
Inside are the tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, facing each other across the church, along with huge cloisters, the monks’ dormitory and a kitchen you have to see to believe.
Then we’ll head back outside, find a café in the square and grab an espresso with something sweet.
History, heartbreak and pastry...that’s a pretty good day trip.
